For months, Mac users had to rely on browser tabs to access Google’s AI, while competitors like OpenAI and Anthropic already offered dedicated desktop apps. That changed this week. According to Google, the new Gemini app is a native desktop experience designed to live exactly where you work.

The app isn’t just a simple window; it’s a deeply integrated tool that can see what is on your screen and help you manage your local files.

The “Option + Space” Shortcut

The standout feature of the new app is how quickly you can access it. By pressing Option + Space, a sleek, Liquid Glass search bar appears over your current work.

Whether you are mid-email or deep in a spreadsheet, you can ask a question, get an answer, and return to your task instantly. For those who prefer a mouse, there is also a new Gemini “spark” icon that lives in your Mac Menu Bar for one-click access.

On-Screen Context Sharing

Perhaps the most powerful addition is the ability to share your screen context. According to Google’s product team, users can now share specific windows or local files directly with Gemini. This allows you to perform tasks such as summarizing the three biggest takeaways from a complex chart or verifying dates while drafting a market report. Creatives can also use the integrated Nano Banana and Veo tools to generate images and videos without breaking their workflow.

Advanced AI Tools at Your Fingertips

The Mac app is built for more than just simple chatting. It includes a dedicated tools menu that gives you instant access to Google’s latest AI innovations. You can use Canvas for side-by-side document editing or Deep Research for complex, multi-step information gathering. Additionally, the app features Personal Intelligence to connect Gemini with your specific Google Workspace data and offers full integration with NotebookLM, allowing you to easily upload and analyze your primary notes and sources.

Availability and Requirements

The Gemini app is available starting today at no cost for all users. However, there are a few technical requirements:

  • OS Version: You must be running macOS 15 (Sequoia) or newer.
  • Download: The app is not currently on the Mac App Store; you must download it directly from gemini.google/mac.

Google has teased that this release is “just the beginning,” with plans to turn Gemini into a proactive desktop assistant that can perform tasks across your entire system in the coming months.
