If you are still holding onto an iPhone 11, the upcoming iOS 27 update might be the signal that it is finally time for an upgrade. New leaks from the tech community suggest that Apple is preparing to cut support for several older models when the new software debuts this summer.

Apple is shifting its focus toward more powerful hardware to handle its new AI-driven ecosystem. As a result, the “A13 Bionic” chip era is likely coming to an end.

The Cut-Off List

Based on a compatibility list shared by reliable insiders, iOS 27 will reportedly require an iPhone 12 or newer. If this holds true, four specific models that currently run iOS 26 will be left behind:

  • iPhone 11
  • iPhone 11 Pro
  • iPhone 11 Pro Max
  • iPhone SE (2nd Generation)

For users of the budget-friendly SE line, only the iPhone SE (3rd Generation) and newer will make the cut. This follows Apple’s traditional seven-year rule, where devices are eventually retired from major software updates once their internal memory (RAM) and processors can no longer keep up with modern demands.

What Happens to Unsupported iPhones?

If your phone is on the”dropped list, there is no need to panic. Your iPhone won’t stop working on the day iOS 27 launches.

  • Security is Priority: Apple typically continues to release critical security patches for older versions of iOS for several years.
  • App Support: Most apps on the App Store will remain compatible with iOS 26 for quite some time, so your daily tools should stay functional.
  • No New Features: You will simply miss out on the headline features of 2026, including the rumored Siri chatbot and new design interface.

A Technical Gap for New Features

Even if your iPhone is on the supported list (like an iPhone 12 or 13), you might still face some limitations. High-end tools like Apple Intelligence and the revamped Siri app are expected to require an iPhone 15 Pro or newer due to the heavy processing power they demand.

Essentially, iOS 27 is shaping up to be two different experiences: a “Snow Leopard” style update focused on stability for older supported phones, and a full AI powerhouse for the latest models.

When Will it Be Official?

Apple is expected to confirm these details at the WWDC 2026 keynote on June 8. After the announcement, a developer beta will likely go live immediately, followed by a public release for everyone in September alongside the launch of the iPhone 18.

Editor's Take

My close friend uses the iPhone X and since 2023 he has not received any major updates and is stuck on iOS 16, but he occasionally receives rare updates with security patches. The same is going to happen with the iPhone 11 series in 2026. But there is nothing to worry about because the next models will also lose majors in the future and this is a software update rule of Apple.
